The Legend of Zelda- A Hero of Hyrule

Growing up, my first introduction to video games was Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt for the Super Nintendo System (NES). In our house, spending the day playing video games was unheard of. We would be allowed to play it for a few hours once all our homework and chores were completed. Later that changed, when we visited our grandparents house, and we would play video games in the spare bedroom while they took naps, hence introducing me to The Legend of Zelda and Mario Kart.

The Legend of Zelda Plot

The Legend of Zelda published by Nintendo and created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka in 1986. The series follows the hero Link, and his quest to rescue Princess Zelda from Ganon or also known as Ganondorf. Link must travel through the kingdom of Hyrule to collect the pieces of the triforce to summon the wisdom, courage, and power to defeat Ganon.

Alternate Timelines

Over the years, there have been additions to the franchise exploring different storylines of the characters and the universe of Hyrule. There are three main storylines viewers are aware of within the franchise, where Ganon is victorious titled, The Hero of Time’s Defeat or Downfall Timeline, Adult Timeline, or Childhood Timeline followed by issues of continuity when trying to follow time throughout the entire series.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time helps set up a historical understanding of Hyrule. Through exposition, the player learns that the Kingdom of Hyrule created by the Golden Goddesses along with the creation of the Triforce. The Triforce is a magical artifact symbolizing wisdom, courage, and power. Hence, Ganon’s quest to find the item and harness the Triforce’s power for himself.

Despite several games released prior to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, including both The Legend of Zelda, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was the game that made me fall in love with the franchise. A lot of the musical score from the game is the most rememberable to me. Plus, the lush green scenery captures the magic of the fantasy universe of Hyrule.

Aside from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, in Ocarina of Time, Princess Zelda prevents Link’s defeat by using the ocarina, a blue musical instrument capable of manipulating time. By sending Link back in time to relive his chiltepe, she grants him happiness that might have otherwise ben denied to him. Music plays a key role throughout the game by emancipating the time of day, the weather, and even summoning Link’s horse Epona.

Furthermore, over the years the games within The Legend of Zelda universe, changes but the main plot of the games remained the same. A hero dressed in green garb set on an adventure to rescue the future ruler of Hyrule, Princess Zelda.
