It’s common in animes to use common features in magic as a focus point or a key plot in their stories. Arcana Fsmigila is an anime that falls into this category. The anime is a drama or action mixed with fantasy. The anime plays on the ideas of family and what people will do to protect those they care about.
On the Island of Regato a mob family known as Arcana Famigila protects the island and creates the money that the island thrives on. The members of the family hold contracts with arcana cards called larcoco and gain abilities from the cards.
Felicita is the main protagonist of the series and holds contracts with The Lovers and The Wheel of Fortune. The lovers allow her to see people’s emotions, and The Wheel of Fortune allows her to change the relationship between a larcoco or arcana with its host. Felicita is a strict woman that is well-versed in sword fighting. She is loyal to her family and cares about their wellbeing. Being the only daughter of the family, she is forced to prove her worth.
Libertà is a rash teen who is known for acting without thinking. His ties with The Fool allows him to make his words become real meaning that if he said break while pointing to a mirror it would shatter. His ability is powerful forcing his mentor, Dante to seal his memories away until he was ready to handle his powers.
Nova is gifted with putting people to sleep with his abilities from The Death arcana. He is talented with weapons and battle strategies despite his young age. He is related to Felicita by her father making them cousins. Nova will do what is right thinking that emotions makes a person weak and tries to act like he has none.
Debito is the older brother with a big heart, and has a foul mouth and flirts with anything wearing a skirt. He owns a local casino and holds a contract with The Hermit allowing him to become invisible. He is well known with using his fists first instead of his head.
Paca has the strength of a monster due to his larcoco being The Strength arcana. He is calm and collective. His mind is usually focused on lasagna instead of problems the family is facing. He is the one who is always happy and tries to make those happy around him.
Dante can change and erase memories due to his contract with The Emperor arcana. He did this to Liberta, after losing his eye in an accident at sea when the teen lost control of his abilities. He loves the sea and is often away completing tasks for the family. He took Libertà under his wing after discovering him being experimented on at an orphanage.
Luca is the servant and attendant to Felicita and holds ties with Temperance arcana. He grew up with Dante and Paca before they were recruited into the family. He was Jolly’s pupil and has knowledge in alchemy. He has a crush on his charge but knows that she only sees him as a protector and a dear friend.
Jolly like his card The Moon, is cold and mysterious to those around him. Given the role as the family’s advisor, he looks after the family while experimenting with alchemy. His larcoco allows him to draw memories from people’s minds.
Sumire is known as mama while her husband Mondo is Papa to the family, which fits given her card being Judgement and his The World. She is calm and mysterious showing compassion to Nova treating him and Larita as her own children. Mondo is the head of the family and his arcana allows him to make up for the arcana that lacks hosts.
Taking a Glance
This anime was suggested to me on YouTube and I’m glad that I gave it a chance though there is only one season up now. I find it an interesting concept that there are people with powers of the Major Arcana though some of the abilities seem a bit off with the card associated with them.
I found it interesting that The Fool, The Lovers, and Death are the three cards that gain the most attention due to their hosts being the center of the story. I would have enjoyed seeing more details of the other characters and not have most of the anime be filler. I would rate the anime a six out of ten. The graphics and character development made up for the confusing story and lack of explanation of the world the anime took place in.
Furthermore, it’s clear that the anime takes its ideas from the tarot deck using Mexican names to connect ties with it being a mafia story. It’s interesting to see a new spin on the Major Arcana and how the cards can have an affect on their hosts and those around them. The anime shows that tarot is more then just a pack of cards; they show a person’s potential and our inner emotions, and evealing abilities and secrets we hide from the world and ourselves.
Now, shush. I’m trying to read,
