Bleach: Guardian of Souls

Cartoon Network used to run anime shows after midnight on a series called Toonomie. One show that I watched was Bleach by Tite Kubo is an action drama about a soul reaper substitute named Ichago. The series focuses on a society that is tasked with collecting the souls of the dead and the souls that go dark with the intentions of attacking those in the human world.

Becoming A Protector

Ichago Kurosaki was a teenager who had the unique ability to see spirits, an ability that made him appear odd and aloof to others around him. One night, he comes across a soul reaper named Rukia Kuchiki who enters his house to fight a hallow. Injured, Rukia gives her powers to Ichago making him into a substitute soul reaper. With assistance from his friends and fellow school mates, Ichago protects his town from hallows and other members of the soul society.

Comrades in Arms

Ichago Kurosaki is a short-tempered hot head that is known for running into danger without thinking. He is given his powers from Rukia and uses brute strength to overcome his challenges. Ichago cares about his family and will do anything in his power to protect them from harm. He lost his month to a hallow and makes a vow to ensure others don’t experience this lost.

Rukia Kuchiki is the adopted sister of Byakuya Kuchiki the head of the Kuchiki clan. Rukia is stubborn and hard on herself sticking to the rules of the soul society and strict in her training with Ichago. Her desire is to impress her brother. She has an ice ability with her sword which represents another version of her personality.

Uyru Ishida is the last living Quincy who can turn pure energy into arrows which are used to fight hallows. Uyru is against Ichago at first seeing him as nothing more then an arrogant soul reaper whose society he swore vengeance against after the death of his grandfather. Uyru is intelligent and has a talent for sewing. He is stubborn and is refluent to ask others for help.

Yasutora “Chad” Sado is a large teen that had transfered from Mexico. He was raised by his grandfather who protected Chad and taught him how to protect others. His grandfather told him to never use your fists in anger, only when you had to fight to protect your own life or someone that you cared about. Chad is soft spoken and chooses his words carefully.

Orihime Inoue is a cheerful energetic teenager who has a crush on Ichago. She is naive and wants to see the best in everyone and will go out of her way to support others in achieving their goals. She is known for creating odd creations in the kitchen that end up being poisonous to the consumer.

Fascination with the Series

I enjoy this series due to the story arc and how developed the characters are throughout the series. I was drawn in by the issues each character was going through by themselves and how it affected the other characters.

The cast of Bleach is vast to the point where there are many characters you either forget about some or they are given an unfinished backstory. I would give the series a seven out of ten rating, based off the first season of the series. I was more a fan of the supporting characters than I was of Ichago. I found him rather annoying and a bit of a god character do to how many skills and abilities he’s given throughout the series.

Furthermore, Bleach is a series that I enjoy and would recommend others to give the series a view. The show has a bit of everything from sword fighting and archery to conflict between the different characters. The show focuses on death and the afterlife showing a unique outlook on what occurs to us after we die. Spirits are a bit unpredictable so having wardens or soul reapers is a different spin on the mysterious grim reapers.

Now, shush. I’m trying to read,
Luna
