There is a belief that the spirit of a child can create the most powerful magic in the world. In Coraline, a seamstress uses soul energy from children to keep herself and her portal realm in existence. The portal world is a paradise for children, yet we all know that nothing is perfect. If it is than it’s a fake hiding a darker threat behind the façade.
Coraline and her parents move into a house called the pink palace. While exploring the new house, Coraline comes across a door that leads to another world. There, she discovers a world parallel to her own except her other mother and father have buttons for eyes.

Coraline Jones is a curious young girl that will head into trouble without thinking. She finds her new life boring and annoys her pareents wanting attention from them. She goes to another world to escape her home and finds a place she loves and only wants to leave when the other mother’s true intentions are revealed to her.
Wyborn Lovat is a boy that scares easily and was told by his grandmother not to go near Coraline’s house. He befriends Coraline and gives her a doll that is a mini version of Coraline. He tells Coraline that her home belongs to his grandmother who didn’t move into the house. Knowing that children end up disappearing inside the house his name is a joke with the lore.
The Other Mother or the Grand Dame is the first owner of the pink palace, who found a portal by falling into the well by her new home. She used her soul to create the world around her, only for her body to slowly decay over time. She soon discovered that children’s souls worked better and used her new world to lure to her knowing that happy children gave her more energy. Her real form is a spider with sewing needles.
Cat There is a cat in the film that aids Coraline and protects her from the other mother when she tries to attack Coraline. The cat is sarcastic and gives Coraline advice even though the girl ignores him most of the time. Some believe that the cat is Wyborn’s grandfather and first victim of the Grand Dame.
Views on the Lore
Henry Selick created a stop motion animated film that some make the wrong assumption that Coraline was created by Tim Burton. The animation was bright and colorful, and the story took a unique idea of what occurs when children get their way.
I would give the film a six out of ten due to poor character development and lack of music throughout the movie. I was a bit confused about the lore behind the film until I watched the videos created by The Theorized on YouTube. He explained how the portal was created and the story being the other mother.
The film focuses on family and what we will do to ensure they are safe. The other world is a world created through magic hoping to lure more children into its web. Knowing that if the children no longer arrive her magic and creation will erode leaving nothing left but a horrible memory.
