Crash Bandicoot is one of Sony’s most popular franchises. Many wondered if they saw the success of Sega’s usage of a loveable mascot by having Sonic the Hedgehog and wanted to profit the same commercial success. They drew inspiration from Australia–New Guinea with bandicoots.
Crash Bandicoot was created by Naughty Dog and developed by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation in 1996. Crash is an Eastern Barred Bandicoot living on North Sanity Island, who was captured and evolved by Doctor Neo Cortex. Throughout the series, Cortex chases after Crash hoping to recapture him. Crash is often accompanied by his ally, Aku Aku, the series deurtagonist.
Doctor Neo Cortex and his assistant Doctor Nitrus Brio hope to take over the world with an army of evolved animals, with the aid of science and their Evolvo-Ray. Crash is their first victim, a peaceful bandicoot. After Crash escapes, Doctor Codex sets his sights on Crash’s girlfriend, Tawna, a female bandicoot hoping to lure Crash back. Crash sets out on an adventure to rescue Tawna and stop Doctor Codex.
Crash Bandicoot Characters
Crash Bandicoot is the main protagonist and has superhuman strength and appears to be rather rash and destructive. Crash is joined by his ally Aku Aku, the guardian of the Wumpa Islands. Aku Aku is the spirit of an ancient witch doctor encased in a floating, wooden mask. Whenever Crash possesses an Aku Aku mask, he will be shielded from one enemy attack or contact.
Doctor Neo Cortex is the main antagonist wanting to use science to rule over the world. His name is a play on the term neocortex, an area of the brain, thus referring to his high intelligence. He is aided by the Tiki mask, Uka Uka, who gives him advice on how to achieve his goals. He wants to alter the DNA of animals to make them stronger and faster to aid in an animal army.
Doctor Nitrus Brio is a scientist who worked under Doctor Neo Cortex, and appears loyal and knowledgeable. He attempts to warns Doctor Codex against his plans thinking that it will fail/ He tries to remind him that animals should be respected yet his warnings go ignored.
I was excited to see the game revised for the Playstation 3, offering a feeling of nostalgia for when I first played the game. The combat system is simplistic, which allows anyone to pick it up rather quickly, thus making the game accessible to play to both novice or advanced gamers. I liked that Crash had two enemies to face wanting Doctor Nitrus Brio to defy Doctor Cortex to aid Crash.
I would give the game a eight out of ten rating, due to the interesting storyline and unique set of characters. The platformer style of the game features difficult levels and sections where you find yourself repeating the same level when you’re unable to figure out the puzzle. Although, the music of the game fits the island environment, I was not a fan of it. The upbeat tempo is nice, but it can feel a tad repetitive after a while.
