There are those who wonder if ghosts or spirits are beings of paranormal or a fantasy created by our minds in times of stress. Casper is a film that falls between these two boundaries. The story is about ghosts trapped in our world but given that they only communicate with a section of people. Many wonders if Casper was a make-believe friend with supernatural abilities.
Casper is about the ghostly patients of Whipstaff Manor ensuring that through haunts the place remains abandoned. Dr. James Harvey and his daughter Kat move into the manor hoping to discover the spirits unfinished business to help move on to the next life. Kat is forced to deal with a new school but also understanding her new ghost friend.
Residents at Whipstaff Manor
Casper is a teenage ghost who feels that his unfinished business is to take care of his uncles after passing away from a sickness. He is smitten by Kat and uses Carrigan to bring her and her father to their manor. Casper is a shy teenage boy who wants to hold onto his memories of being alive not wanting to forget who he was before his death.
The Ghostly Trio is better known as Stinky, Stretch, and Fatso, being the three uncles of Casper. They are pranksters and enjoy scaring humans. They pick on their nephew not understanding why he is friendly to humans instead of taking part in scaring them.
Carrigan Crittenden is a self-centered and shallow woman who is left the Whipstaff Manor after the death of her father seeing the manor as a dump. She’s only interested in it when she discovers there’s a treasure hidden inside the manor.
Kat Harvey moves to the manor with her father James who is obsessed with finding the spirit of his late wife. Kat is interested in being a normal teenager and ends up being friends with Casper. Kat has a sarcastic wit and has no problem speaking her mind. She loves her father and will do what is right even when facing spirits.
I watched this movie as a child and even as an adult, I still watch it during the month of Halloween. Despite the movie being based on ghosts, the movie is family-friendly making the spirits goofier and more aloof then scary.
I would give this film a six out of ten rating, since I enjoyed the characters in the film and the designs of the manor and town. The story was a bit weak and seems to fall apart and change halfway through the film.
With the cheesy jokes and gags that this was a family movie created for a younger audience. The film isn’t scary instead focusing on family and how we try to protect them even in some cases after death. ghosts are spirits that hold on to a place if they feel they have something to accomplish in the world of the living. Casper is one of these ghosts yet for his uncles it’s never explained why they decided to stay and haunt their family home.
Now, shush, I’m trying to read,
