Code Geiss Review

What if there was a power that allowed you to change the world? To hear people’s thoughts, change their emotions or memories? To make them obedient without question? For those gifted with the power of Geass, these powers are both a blessing and a curse.

Gift of The Gods

Geass comes from the Gaelic meaning curse or gift from the Gods. The series Code Geass by Sunrise is a series based around Lelouch Vi Britannia and his rebellion of the Black Knights to create the new world for Japan. Using Britannia weapon the knightmare frames which are large robots against their creators. Along the way Lelouch develops his Geass and uses his power to uncover his mothers murder.

Rivals of War

C. C. is an immortal with a code allowing her to create contracts with people. Her geass allowed her to force people to love her only for it to go out of control. She creates a contract with Lelouch hoping that he can complete her wish. C.C. is cold and emotionless finding amusement in creating chaos for Lelouch.

Lelouch Vi Britannia is the exiled eleventh prince of Britannia and is sent to Japan with his little sister Nunnally. He creates the alias Zero the leader of the Black Knights. Lelouch is a chess prodigy and genius yet he seems average in his classes spending his time gambling. Zero is a calculating strategist using his charisma to gain loyal followers. His geass allows him to give a command forcing the person to follow through with it.

Charles Vi Britannia is the ruler of Britannia and his geass allows him to change people’s memories. He sees the Japanese as elevens thinking that they should accept being beneath Britannia instead of fighting against them. His goals are to spread Britannia’s influences over the world. Charles is cold hearted seeing everyone including his own family as pawns in his game.

Suzaku Kununugi is an honorary Britannia being the pilot of the Knightmare Lancelot. He is best friends of Lelouch meeting him when Nunnally and Lelouch first entered Japan. He is a kind person who wants to help everyone. He wants a better world but wants to accomplish this goal without spilling blood.

Fighting Free Will

I found it interesting that the power of Geass allowed a person to be changed by the power used on them, going against a person’s free will. Most people that practice a form of magic knows that free will can’t be controlled leading to a spell backfiring or harming the castor.

I would give the show an eight out of ten rating, enjoying the development of the characters and the themes explored throughout the series. There are a few episodes that I felt weren’t needed and it would have helped if the story was explained over time instead of at the end of the series.

The series makes you cheer for the rebellion of Japan and feel sadness of the fate that befalls the characters. Lelouch goals was to create a happy world for his little sister sacrificing his own happiness along the way. The theme of chess is shown throughout the series explaining Lelouch logic and hinting at the strategies of war throughout the series. Showing that in chess you must allow logic to rule your actions for emotions will lead to second guessing and distractions preventing you from reaching your goals.

Now, shush, I’m trying to read
