Many fans of Nickelodeon were introduced to a new hero named Aaog in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The animated show ran for three seasons before its story was complete and a sequel was created. The show has influences of Budish beliefs, war, and human’s connections to nature through the four core elements.
The world of the Avatar is split into four nations The Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and The Air Nomeds. The job of the Avatar is to keep harmony between the four nations and learn how to bend the four elements through different styles of martial arts.
When the Avatar dies their spirit is reincarnated through the Avatar Cycle claiming the next person for the position. In the Series Aang is the current Avatar and is learning how to bend from his teachers Katana, Zuko, and Toph to defeat the Fire Nation and bring harmony back to the world.

Aang (Zach Tyler Eison) is a young Air Nomad that is chosen as the Avatar. Scared of his responsibilities he runs away from home only to get knocked into the ocean after a huge storm. Frozen in an iceberg, he is awakened one-hundred years later by Katana and Sokka.
Katara (Mae Whitman) is a water bender from the Southern Water Tribe traveling with her older brother Sokka (Jack DeSena). Katana trains Aang in the ways of water bending being a fighter. She goes against the concept that female water benders are only good at healing.
Zuko (Dante Basco) is the banished Prince of the Fire Nation traveling with his Uncle Iroh (Greg Baldwin). For the first half of the show, he is trying to capture the Avatar to regain honor with his father. In the second half of the show, he has joined the Avatar and is his teacher in fire bending.
Toph (Jessie Flower) is a blind earth bender from the Earth Kingdom who wants independence from her over-protective rich parents. She travels with the group becoming Aang’s teacher becoming friends with others along the way. She learned how to bend from a group of blind mole rats showing that through vibrations in the ground she could see movement.
Ozai (Mark Hamill) is the Lord of the Fire Nation and is the father to Zuko and Azula (Grey DeLisle). Like the fire lords before him Ozai wants to control all four nations under his rules. His hope is to use Sozin Comet which increases all fire benders abilities to aid him in competing his conquest.
This show had a unique way of combining nature with human interactions. Showing how bends reflect their element both in their abilities and personalities. I would rate this series an eight out of ten due to its breathtaking scenery and the emotional journey the characters embark on.
The plot is the simple war story of a corrupt ruler where the heroes are forced to stop to save their world. I would have enjoyed a more complex plot and to have some details of the history better explained. The series tells the story of a group of adventures going out to save the day.
There is a deeper message behind the plot as each character goes on a physical and emotional journey to discover who they are. Their morals and actions are contently questioned showing the characters development even when making mistakes. The character’s adversity shows us how we are always searching for inner balance and inner peace.
Now, shush, I’m trying to read,
